Cornucopia: The Earth School Project

The Cornucopia (Earth School) Project teaches sustainable farming and nutrition in Telangana’s government schools. Initiated in 2020 as a pilot (with KVK Warangal and Centre for Sustainable Agriculture), it currently serves 2,826 students in 5 institutions  synergyindia.foundation. Its primary goal is to empower youth with agricultural skills so they can grow their own food and appreciate sustainable farming. In practice, Cornucopia converts unused school land into organic vegetable and fruit farms. Students work hands-on – preparing soil, sowing seeds, and harvesting crops – under SIF’s guidance. Harvests are incorporated into school meals, giving students nutrient-rich food while reducing food costs  synergyindia.foundation. By learning farming, students build “food empathy” – a deeper connection to what they eat – which research shows leads to healthier diets and well-being  synergyindia.foundation.

Background: Nutrition and Agriculture

India still struggles with child malnutrition. Many students in rural areas suffer undernourishment despite living in farming communities. Experts note that 15.7% of India’s GDP is from agriculture  synergyindia.foundation, yet few children learn to farm their own food. Cornucopia addresses this gap in education and health: it is part of SIF’s broader mission to instill “sustainable livelihoods” in future generations. By focusing on organic farming and crop diversity, the project also promotes environmental conservation on campus. For example, researchers find that children who grow their own food develop “food empathy”, leading to better diets and concentration  synergyindia.foundation. Cornucopia leverages this insight to make farming a learning tool and a source of nutrition.

Implementation: Hands-On Farming Curriculum

Outcomes and Benefits

Cornucopia’s pilot has yielded promising results. Already 2,826 students have gained farming experience across five Telangana schools  synergyindia.foundation. By eating produce they helped grow, these students enjoy highly nutritious meals, which support their physical and cognitive development  synergyindia.foundation. Schools report that integrating farm produce significantly reduces food purchase costs  synergyindia.foundation. Attendance and enrollment have also improved, as students are excited to come to the “Earth School” and learn practical skills  synergyindia.foundation. Beyond nutrition, students gain confidence and environmental awareness; Cornucopia fosters “a paradigm-shift” toward agri-preneurship rather than viewing farming as undesirable  synergyindia.foundation.

Scaling the Model

Given India’s agrarian economy, Cornucopia is highly replicable. SIF envisions expanding it to additional institutions in Telangana and beyond  synergyindia.foundation. The concept can be adapted to any school with land – even small urban patches can be used. By collaborating with agricultural universities and CSR partners, similar farm-learning labs could be set up nationwide. As one summary notes, this project not only boosts food sustainability in schools but also “paves the way for livelihood orientation” through hands-on agricultural experience  synergyindia.foundation.

Conclusion & Call to Action

Cornucopia is creating a generation of food-literate, self-sufficient students. It demonstrates that teaching sustainable farming in schools can simultaneously fight malnutrition and teach valuable life skills  synergyindia.foundation  synergyindia.foundation. Synergy India Foundation invites educators, donors and policymakers to support or replicate the Earth School model. Donations (for farm equipment or garden beds), volunteer experts, or partnerships can help plant Cornucopia’s seeds in more communities. By joining SIF in this initiative, stakeholders help ensure every child learns to grow and eat healthily while preparing for a greener future.
